Now and Then - Dedicated to Mark Shulgasser

Mark Shulgasser passed away on Wednesday Nov 19, 2026 at his home in Jeffersonville, NY. He was a long time broadcaster on WJFF Radio Catskill among other things. He was a prominent operatic librettist for the American composer Lee Hoiby, his partner of many years. Mark was a one-of-a kind astrologer and prepared charts for many of the musicians he admired. His radio program "Music of the Spheres" combined his love of both music and astrology.

Recently Mark had been very active, opening a book store in Jeffersonville in 2024 named The Book Mark. During his life he had at least four book stores that I know of and his collection of books is extensive. There are thousands of volumes he left behind at his house. He also had a fascinating collection of porcelain, some going back to the 17th century. He had a beautiful sculpture of Lee Hoiby in his dining room along with one of Schubert. His home was always inviting and he had many dinners, birthdays and celebrations around the large marble table in the center of the room. There was always a seasonal bouquet on the table, most recently red snowberry branches.

Later this month I will produce a special program using clips from his program Music of the Spheres.

Mark will be missed by many.

Now and Then - Brewster Smith Live Interview

Brewster Smith is a vibrant musician and is releasing two new singles in 2025 "Thorns" and "Expanding Universe". He explains the creative process and his collaboration with a long time friend as they record mix and master. He has a strong vision of song structure, the build up of interest and variety as the song progresses. You can hear it in the intricate production on these newest recordings. Brewster is also producing other musicians including Lucas Maehara Rotman's recent release "We", the first single from his upcoming EP "Lost and Found". We listen to all this music on today's program.

You might already know Brewster Smith as the owner and visionary, along with his wife Molly, behind Rafter's Tavern in Callicoon for the past six years before selling it to a new owner. The musical community they fostered continues to grow and inspires me to be more creative myself.

Sunday, May 18, 2025 Sing It Loud - Songs of Protest.

Music brings people together. This concert of songs of protest gives voice to our differences, even as we seek a “more perfect” union. It is a celebration of free speech through song. The event features residents and artists from the Upper Delaware National Scenic and Recreation Area and Narrowsburg, NY.

Singer songwriters from a small rural community in upstate NY and surrounding areas will be performing SING IT LOUD, a live concert featuring songs of protest intended to inspire people locally and nationally to do the same on street corners, in clubs and concert halls, online and everywhere music can be heard.

The concert will be presented Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 1-3pm before a live audience in Delaware Hall in The Narrowsburg Union at 7 Erie Avenue, Narrowsburg, NY 12764. Admission will be free, but contributions will be gladly accepted. The event will be streamed live on Facebook.

The program will feature classic and original protest songs performed by a wide variety of musicians including Lucas Maehara Rotman, Richard Traviss, Poison Love, Doug Rogers, Kathy Geary, Spook Handy, Pat Wictor and Scott Palermo. The concert will feature a sing-along with the audience.
